How to use the Word Counter
- Type directly into the box above or paste text from a document, email or website. The numbers update instantly, so there is no button to press.
- Read the tiles: total words, characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs.
- Check the reading and speaking time to see how long your text takes to read silently or deliver aloud.
- Look at “Most used words” to spot terms you repeat too often, then edit for variety.
- Press Copy text to take your content with you, or Clear to start a fresh draft.
A word here is any group of characters separated by a space or line break. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute and speaking time assumes 130 words per minute, which are common averages for adults.
Benefits of using this tool
- Stay inside limits. Meta descriptions work best near 155–160 characters, tweets stop at 280 and a single SMS holds 160. A live counter shows you exactly where you stand.
- Private by design. Counting happens inside your browser. Your text is never uploaded or stored on a server.
- Works for Indian languages. Telugu, Hindi, Tamil and English text separated by spaces is counted correctly, and the Hindi danda (।) is treated as a sentence end.
- Sharper writing. The repeated-word list helps students, bloggers and content writers trim filler and avoid overusing one keyword.
- Fast and free. No login, no installation and no word limit set by the tool, so it works well on a phone too.
Who can use it
Students checking essay and assignment limits, bloggers planning article length, SEO writers tuning titles and descriptions, translators estimating work, and speakers timing a talk will all find a quick answer here.
Disclaimer
The results are provided for general guidance only. Microsoft Word, Google Docs, exam portals and publishing platforms may treat hyphenated words, numbers, emojis and symbols differently, so always confirm the final count on the platform that enforces your limit. Reading and speaking times are averages and will vary from person to person. Languages written without spaces between words, such as Chinese or Japanese, cannot be counted accurately by word. Your text is not saved, so refreshing or closing the page clears it. This tool is offered as is, without warranty of any kind, and the site owner is not liable for any loss arising from its use.
Frequently asked questions
Is this Word Counter free to use?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no account and has no daily usage cap.
Does the tool save or upload my text?
No. All counting runs locally in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to or stored on our servers.
Does it work for Telugu and Hindi text?
Yes. Because words in these languages are separated by spaces, the word count is reliable. Characters are counted as typed, so combined letters and vowel signs may count as more than one character.
How are reading and speaking times calculated?
Reading time divides your word count by 200 words per minute, and speaking time divides it by 130 words per minute.
Why does my count differ from Microsoft Word?
Different programs follow different rules for hyphens, slashes, numbers and symbols. Small differences are normal, so use the count of the platform that sets your limit as the final check.
Is there a maximum text length?
The tool sets no limit. Extremely large pastes of several hundred thousand words may feel slow, depending on your device.
